Benefits of a Metal Roof in Winter

Winter will soon be upon us, but it’s not too late to get started on a new roofing project! The experienced Columbus, Ohio, roofing contractors at Muth & Company install both asphalt shingle and metal roofs. While asphalt shingles are by far the most common roofing material used in our area, metal also offers a range of attractive benefits. It will not deteriorate and stays looking like new for decades. Because a metal roof lasts approximately two to three times longer than asphalt shingles, the higher initial cost will be offset by its lower lifecycle cost.

In winter, a metal roof offers several unique benefits.

Metal keeps your home warm. When properly designed and installed, a metal roof system can stop fluctuations in temperature between the attic and the outdoor air. This reduces condensation build-up in the attic which can negatively impact the attic insulation value. A “cold” roof also tends to keep snow on the roof, which adds another layer of insulation.

Metal can be installed in the winter. Shingles require special precautions to be installed when temperatures turn cold, but metal roofing can be installed no matter the weather. Metal roof installations are not uncommon even during the coldest winter, especially because a heavy winter snow can be the “straw that breaks the camel’s back” for an old roof that needs to be replaced.

Metal sheds snow. Metal roofing systems are designed to shed snow and ice. When temperatures rise above freezing, heavy snow simply slides off, rather than weighing down the roof and threatening its structural integrity. Metal roofing can stop ice damming at the eaves, so water can’t back up and leak into your home. Metal roofing is also easily compatible with gutter heating cables.
