Chad’s Top 5 Tips for Winterizing Your Home

As a roofer for the past 20 + years, Chad Muth knows a thing or 2  (or 5!) about taking care of your home. So here’s Chad’s list of the Top 5 areas you should focus on when preparing your home for another harsh Columbus winter.
1. Start At The Top.
Clean all debris off roof and clear out your gutters and down spouts. Check flashing details to make sure nothing is pulling loose, that the caulk hasn’t cracked or deteriorated and that the flashing is in good condition. This will prevent clogs and keep water from overflowing into your home’s foundation.
2. Insulate Your Attic.
Improper attic insulation is the number one reason for heat loss in winter so make sure your attic is properly insulated before the temperature takes the plunge!
3. Winterize Those Windows.
Remove window screens and install storm windows to provide an extra layer of warmth that will keep you more comfortable while saving on heating costs.
4. Go Outside.
Gardening season is long over so put the hose away until spring. It’s also a good idea to cover the spigot with an insulated cover. These are inexpensive and available at home improvement stores.
5. Don’t forget the sump pump!
Remove the freeze plug from the sump pump drain coming out of the house into the ground. This is important to prevent the water lines from freezing and breaking which can cause thousands of dollars in damage.
