As the school year winds down, we all look forward to the long, lazy days of summer…or do we? Most families today don’t have the luxury of hanging out at the pool with their kids for weeks at a time. Both mom and dad have to go to work. That’s when a summer camp program can be a lifesaver! We’ve put together a list of a unique and fun summer camps to help you find an experience that can mean the difference between summer boredom and summer fun!

Down on the Farm
“I can’t get my kid to put her dish in the dishwasher, but there she’s working all day on the farm, milking goats and doing chores.”- Chad Muth, parent of 14-year-old camper, Codie.

The Country School Farm is an Amish farm where kids can spend their days doing farm chores. No cell phones, no ipads, no screens, just good old-fashioned farm work and tons of fun! www.tcsfarm.com

Get Wild
Do you want your kid hanging out with a bunch of animals this summer? If it’s at the Columbus Zoo summer camp, you do! Campers get up close and personal with the zoo residents, all in a safe, supervised, educational and fun way! www.colszoo.org.

Be a Good Sport!
No matter what your child’s favorite sport or activity is, Sports Ohio probably offers it including basketball, lacrosse, mini-golf, dance, go carting, etc. The variety of activities and sports available make this a popular camp that keeps kids coming back year after year! www.sports-ohio.com.

Mind Your Manners
Burping, chewing with your mouth open, forgetting to use a napkin…if any or all of these behaviors regularly show up at your dinner table, enroll your kid in Etiquette University! It’s a summer camp for kids who need to learn how to act in a more polite and civilized way, especially at mealtime. www.magnificentmanners.com

Parks and Recreation
The greater Columbus area has lots of Parks and Rec departments that offer summer camps and specialty camps including soccer, cheerleading, tennis, art, baseball, the list goes on. www.columbusrecparks.com

Don’t get stuck with a bored kid this summer! Enroll yours in a summer camp and give them the excitement of learning new skills or perfecting old ones, making new friends and having fun!

Spring is in full bloom here in the Columbus area and we all want to get out and enjoy it!

Climb this!

Getting your home ready for outdoor activities can be a big job and at Muth and Company, we want to make sure it’s a safe one. Last week we told you about the extensive safety training we do for everyone on the Muth team. This week, Chad did some thinking and came up with tips to help you, your home and family stay SAFE.

Outdoor Safety
1. Wear safety goggles when using a weed eater. You’ll look hot and stay safe!

2. Inspect all electric cords for cuts, nicks and frays. If you have an appliance with a damaged cord, sorry! Time to replace it.

3. Have your lawn mower thoroughly inspected. Make any necessary repairs.

4. If you have to climb a ladder, make sure it’s a strong, safe one. Avoid rickety, broken ladders.

5. Make sure exterior outlets are safely grounded to prevent shocks and even worse…electrocution.

6. It may look like fun, but it’s really dangerous. Never mow your lawn with your child on your lap when using a riding mower.

7. Always wear a bike helmet and have your kids wear one too!

8. Biker Dudes and Babes: Always wear a motorcycle helmet!

9. Always use sunscreen and have your kids use it too!

Indoor Safety
1. Clean out the lint traps in your dryer.

2. Test all your smoke alarms and replace any old batteries.

3. Test all your Carbon Dioxide detectors and replace any old batteries.

4. Have your Air Conditioning system and any individual AC units inspected.

At Muth and Company, we love roofing and we’re proud to be the top Columbus roofer. We also appreciate you, our customers and we want to share our knowledge of general home care and maintenance whenever we can. We’d also love to hear from you, if you have any other spring safety tips, let us know! Get out and enjoy a great Columbus, Ohio spring and…stay safe!

At Muth and Company, it’s the most wonderful time of the year because we’re gettin’ busy! We have 2 main priorities as we ramp up and prepare for another productive roofing season:

1. Giving you, our customers the best roofing experience possible. That means the highest level of service and quality that keeps us at the top of our game year after year.

2. Keeping our job sites running safely and efficiently to ensure the well being of each and every Muth team member.

We take safety seriously, we’ve even declared April, “Muth Safety Month.” In the roofing business, safety means training, training and more training. Muth team members go through training on everything from ladder safety to safely installing products. Muth team members recently completed GAF’s Roofing 101, this week they will attend Certaineed’s Re-Certification Training and next week they’ll go through Ladder Safety and Fall Protection training from Ladder Man and Safety Services Plus. These training programs aren’t cheap, but for Muth and Company, safety training is just part of the price of doing business.

Keeping our team members well educated and fully trained in the safest, most current industry standards and practices is vitally important to us. Helping you keep your home and family safe is also important to us. We want to share tips and guidelines for you to stay safe this spring so stay tuned for next week’s blog featuring Chad’s Safety Tips for your home!

<a href="http://www.muthroofing.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Hail-Damage1.jpg" rel="lightbox[5018]" title="Oh Hail? Just Call Muth! But hearing the banging of hail is another story! Lucky for us, the hailstorms that hit Columbus last weekend may have left some of us stressed and nervous, but didn’t do much damage. Still, spring is just beginning and who knows when severe hail will happen? Here’s how Muth and Company can help if the hail hits in a big way.

Shingle Bruising…Ouch
Hail damage can be difficult to spot. The impact of hail hitting your roof can cause a “bruise” in the membranes of the shingles. These bruises are sneaky…they are tough to see but over time they’ll allow water to leak in. The Muth Team has trained hail damage specialists who can assess the severity of the damage and offer solutions.

Got Granules?
When severe bruising from hailstorms or even normal erosion occurs in roof shingles, granules begin to break off. These granules collect in your gutters, not only causing your gutters to clog, but often signaling that it’s time for a new roof. Loose granules can also expose the remaining asphalt to the sun and subsequent storms so it’s important to address this problem as quickly as possible.

After a hailstorm, let us perform a comprehensive roof structure inspection and gutter system inspection to see if any granules are collecting and what the best next steps are for your home.

At Muth and Company, we’ve got the experience and training to determine if your roof has suffered hail damage, how bad the damage is and whether a repair or replacement is needed. When you hear a severe weather forecast, rest assured that you’ve got the Muth team to help you weather any storm. Call us at 614-882-0900 to schedule your roof inspection today!

All too often they return home unsure of what the next step in their life should be, unsure of how to re-enter the workforce, unsure of themselves. Muth and Company hopes to help eliminate some of that uncertainty by putting soldiers back to work. Muth is proud to take part in Hero2Hired (H2H), a program started by the United States Chamber of Commerce to help soldiers get back into the workforce. H2H is a two-day program on March 19-20 at the Franklin County Veterans Memorial. The program provides two days of important programming:

Career Training Workshops- military personnel can receive expert guidance and advice on all things job related including how to write a resume and how present themselves in an interview.

Employment Fair-representatives from local companies will be available to discuss opportunities in their companies.

As any job seeker knows, skills and preparation mean nothing without connections. The second day of the program is an employment fair where companies can connect with military men and women who may be just what they are looking for in an employee. Muth and Company plans to participate in this job fair and hopes to come away with some potential new team members.

Chad Muth explains why he is so passionate about H2H. “I have lots of family and friends that have served in the military and they all panic a little when getting out because they are worried about getting a job and getting back to civilian life.” He was happy to hear about Hero 2 Hired because it provided a structured way to connect with many returning military personnel in one place. Chad adds, “We have looked into programs before but never found anything to easily solicit military. This is a program through several agencies. I received a letter in the mail and then moved forward registering on line.”

Former military make great employees for a couple of reasons that Chad finds very impressive. He says, “I have always liked hiring Vets. Vets have a strong work ethic and are used to working together as a team. That’s what we are at Muth and Company…a big team!”

The next time you see a Muth and Company truck in your neighborhood, you may want to say “hello” and offer your thanks to the team members. There’s a good chance one of them just might be a Veteran.

Check out the Hero2Hired program taking place in Columbus by visiting the US Chamber of Commerce website. http://www.uschamber.com/hiringourheroes/Columbus-OH

Chad’s tips helped you prepare your home for the winter months and now your favorite roofer has your back when it comes to the spring and summer months. Winter is (hopefully) over and it’s time to get ready for spring storms and summer heat. So Chad came up with a few tips to get you on the right track for a hassle free home. This way you can get out and enjoy the nice weather in Columbus.

Inspection, Inspection, Inspection!
Your roof and gutters may have taken a beating during the harsh winter months. Lucky for you Muth has ESP! Now is a great time to put our ESP (Extensive Service Plan) to work for your home. With an ESP we will:

Provide you with a complete inspection report

Caulk all flashings

Clean all gutters, re-nail gutter spikes, check for clogged down spouts

Clean and paint all flashings

Inspect attic/evaluate the condition of venting, insulation, bath fans

With an ESP, we handle these tough and sometimes dangerous (falling off a ladder ain’t pretty) chores for you. But the rest of Chad’s Tips are all DIY! Get These Done So Your Home Looks Great!

Take down screens, clean them and put them back

Check outside lights including porch lights and flood lights and replace any burned out bulbs

Tune up your lawn mower, replace the plugs and sharpen the blades

Put down pre-emergent for your lawn. Everybody loves a lush lawn so don’t delay this chore!

Spend one early spring weekend doing these few chores. And be sure to contact our very nice and very helpful folks at Muth and Company to schedule your ESP. Then, we’ll climb the ladder to do the tough stuff and you can take it easy and enjoy the coming spring and summer months in our fair city!

The Muth team loves to share the cool stuff we do. Be sure to “like” our facebook page where we regularly post our favorite places to go and things to do around town. Let us know if you have any favorites and we’ll try to check them out!

No matter what the calendar or the weather forecast says, insulating your attic is an important item on your home maintenance “to-do” list. Even though it feels like winter is winding down; here in Columbus we know all too well that winter’s not over…yet. And once spring does come, the summer heat and humidity won’t be far behind. If your home isn’t well insulated, you may be paying too much in winter heating bills AND summer air conditioning costs. Also, not having enough insulation, improper venting or vent pipes not installed correctly can cause major problems. Make your home worry free. Let Muth and Company perform a complete attic energy efficiency inspection. Then you’ll know for sure if your attic is up to snuff. And if it isn’t? Muth will handle any issues before they turn into bigger problems.

Why Insulation is NOT a DIY
Painting a room, changing a light fixture, replacing old flooring…some projects are perfect to google the “how to” and “get ‘er done”! But attic insulation is a project that’s best left to the professionals for three important reasons:
*Building standards for insulation vary in different parts of Ohio. It’s important to meet the minimum requirements for your specific area. At Muth and Company, it’s our job to stay current on the insulation requirements for every county we serve.
*Prep work is important when it comes to an insulation project. Soffits, bath fans and other electrical work can pose challenges that are best left to the pros.
*Attics can be dangerous places to work in. The floorboards aren’t always secure and accidents can happen if you aren’t used to working in those kinds of spaces. The Muth Team has years of experience working in attics and on rooftops and we know how to do it safely.

At Muth and Company, we’ve got it all covered, the requirements needed for your home’s location, the most thorough and safest way to prep your attic to maintain the function of all soffitts, fans and wiring. Stay out of your attic and let Muth climb up there for you!

Why Call Muth and Company?
*A Muth and Company representative will do a comprehensive attic evaluation and inspection of your home, including ventilation areas.
*We will provide you with a written form detailing your home’s problems and, most importantly, how we can offer solutions.
Contact Muth and Company at 614-882-0900 to schedule your attic energy efficiency inspection today! One of our knowledgeable and friendly team members is waiting to talk to you!

259. That’s the number of Ohio men and women who lost their lives in the War on Terror. A beautiful and permanent memorial in our town, Sunbury, Ohio was dedicated in June 2007 to honor these military heroes. Rows of white crosses inscribed with the name of each hero line the lush grass at the Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial. A granite statue of our state, benches for reflection and other tributes complete the scene. It’s a serene place to visit, to take in the surroundings and say thanks to the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country following its most devastating attack in modern history.
This memorial inspires us to do our part in thanking Ohio’s military heroes for their service. Muth and Company is participating in GAF’s Roofs for Troops program. Military personnel who purchase a lifetime roofing system from GAF can take advantage of a $300 rebate valid now until the end of 2012. New Muth customers who are current or retired members of any branch of the U.S. armed forces are eligible for this rebate. Click for more details and to download a rebate form.
Spend a few hours visiting the Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial, it is a lovely and inspiring way to spend some time thanking those who gave their lives to guarantee the freedoms we all take for granted.

How many tons of asphalt shingles would you guess Muth and Company could recycle in one year? 10 tons? 100 tons? In 2011, we recycled 757 tons of asphalt shingles and were named a GAF Certified Green Roofer. GAF, a leading manufacturer of roofing products recognizes professional roofing contractors for their recycling efforts and Muth and Company is proud to receive this certification.
Every little bit helps in the world of sustainability and 757 tons is the approximate weight of 126 elephants-that’s more than a little bit! Picture that huge amount of asphalt going into a recycling center instead of a landfill. The dramatic expansion of the landfill inspired Chad Muth to make the commitment to run a green roofing business. He explains, “In 20 years, I saw the landfill go from being four stories deep to four stories high. I felt strongly that this wasn’t good and I was going to do something about it.” And boy, did he do something! Over 11 million asphalt shingles enter landfills every year. Roofing materials are made for durability and don’t decompose easily, they are perfect for projects that require strength and durability. Muth and Company goes out of our way to deliver used shingles to a recycling center in Williamsport, Ohio. Not every roofer makes that extra effort, most drop the shingles off at the local landfill and then it’s on to the next job. We think it’s worth going that extra mile, or more accurately, the extra 50 miles for the sake of the environment and we like knowing the shingles will be repurposed for things like road materials. In addition the Muth team has made a commitment to recycling aluminum metals from gutter projects and to living greener in their offices and homes.
Talking about being committed to the environment is a popular trend in business these days but GAF and Muth aren’t just talking, we’re taking action and making a difference in saving the planet…one TON of roofing shingles at a time.
