That’s the number of Ohio men and women who lost their lives in the War on Terror. A beautiful and permanent memorial in our town, Sunbury, Ohio was dedicated in June 2007 to honor these military heroes. Rows of white crosses inscribed with the name of each hero line the lush grass at the Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial. A granite statue of our state, benches for reflection and other tributes complete the scene. It’s a serene place to visit, to take in the surroundings and say thanks to the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country following its most devastating attack in modern history.
This memorial inspires us to do our part in thanking Ohio’s military heroes for their service. Muth and Company is participating in GAF’s Roofs for Troops program. Military personnel who purchase a lifetime roofing system from GAF can take advantage of a $300 rebate valid now until the end of 2012. New Muth customers who are current or retired members of any branch of the U.S. armed forces are eligible for this rebate. Click for more details and to download a rebate form.
Spend a few hours visiting the Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial, it is a lovely and inspiring way to spend some time thanking those who gave their lives to guarantee the freedoms we all take for granted.

How many tons of asphalt shingles would you guess Muth and Company could recycle in one year? 10 tons? 100 tons? In 2011, we recycled 757 tons of asphalt shingles and were named a GAF Certified Green Roofer. GAF, a leading manufacturer of roofing products recognizes professional roofing contractors for their recycling efforts and Muth and Company is proud to receive this certification.
Every little bit helps in the world of sustainability and 757 tons is the approximate weight of 126 elephants-that’s more than a little bit! Picture that huge amount of asphalt going into a recycling center instead of a landfill. The dramatic expansion of the landfill inspired Chad Muth to make the commitment to run a green roofing business. He explains, “In 20 years, I saw the landfill go from being four stories deep to four stories high. I felt strongly that this wasn’t good and I was going to do something about it.” And boy, did he do something! Over 11 million asphalt shingles enter landfills every year. Roofing materials are made for durability and don’t decompose easily, they are perfect for projects that require strength and durability. Muth and Company goes out of our way to deliver used shingles to a recycling center in Williamsport, Ohio. Not every roofer makes that extra effort, most drop the shingles off at the local landfill and then it’s on to the next job. We think it’s worth going that extra mile, or more accurately, the extra 50 miles for the sake of the environment and we like knowing the shingles will be repurposed for things like road materials. In addition the Muth team has made a commitment to recycling aluminum metals from gutter projects and to living greener in their offices and homes.
Talking about being committed to the environment is a popular trend in business these days but GAF and Muth aren’t just talking, we’re taking action and making a difference in saving the planet…one TON of roofing shingles at a time.

At Muth and Company, we tend to shy away from tooting our own horn. Doing top quality work and providing outstanding customer service? That’s just what we do. We are proud to serve as the top Columbus roofer for the past 20+ years. But getting recognized by Angie’s List is an honor we just can’t keep quiet about.
Angie’s List, an organization that began right here in Columbus in 1995, uses consumer reviews to recommend contractors and service providers. A company can only get on the list if their work meets and exceeds customer expectations. Muth and Company isn’t just on Angie’s List; we were the first Columbus roofer to make the list AND we have been recognized with the Super Service Award. This distinction is given to companies that achieve and maintain a SUPERIOR service record. Muth and Company is proud to have received Angie’s List Super Service Award for 13 years in a row. No, that’s no typo…13 years. Angie’s List has another special distinction, “Pages of Happiness” where customers can nominate a company they are impressed with. Muth and Company has been awarded 59 Pages of Happiness, where customers were not just satisfied but wowed by their experience and awarded us A’s in every category. We are very proud of our entire team and the work we have done to receive this award, but we really owe a huge “thank you” to you, our customers. You continue to give Muth and Company the outstanding reviews that result in Angie’s List recognition for 13 years and counting.

A Big Thank You to U.S. Veterans…
Are you a U.S. Vet or do you currently serve in the United States military? Muth and company together with GAF invites veterans and military personnel to take advantage of GAF’s Roofs for Troops program. GAF, a supplier of roofing materials, is offering a $300 rebate on their lifetime roofing systems for all active military, veterans and retirees. To download the rebate form, go to www.gaf.com/military. Every member of the Muth Team goes through GAF’s Master Elite certification training program to stay current in the latest products and how to best install them.

Muth and Company appreciates the service our greater Columbus veterans and active military personnel provide. We are proud to participate in GAF’s Roofs for Troops program to our service men and women and veterans in the greater Columbus area.

Taking on a healthy lifestyle is a great New Year’s resolution but Muth and Company has an idea for a much more fun one. Resolve to get out and enjoy this community we live in! Many of us take for granted the vibrant and exciting city we live in and we at Muth and Company are committed to serving the Columbus community by providing top quality roofing services, by giving back through fundraising and service and by taking advantage of everything the Greater Columbus area has to offer. We’d like to share a few ideas in the hopes that they will inspire you to make 2012 the year to get out and explore our great city!

Celebrate the big 2-0-0!
We may not look a day over 195 but 2012 is the bicentennial of the city of Columbus. The citywide celebration will include a variety of art, cultural and community events throughout the year. We will keep an eye on all the happenings and keep you posted on the excitement. Also, feel free to let us know if you hear of any events coming up that celebrate the Columbus bicentennial. Check out the event website: www.200columbus.com.

Intensity on Ice
Ever go to a fight and see a hockey game break out? There isn’t always a bench-clearing brawl but a Blue Jackets game is always a fun family event. Visiting Nationwide Arena to see hockey pros Wisniewski and Nash take to the ice is exciting, win or lose. Family discounts, fan giveaways and combo deals are often available at the team’s website www.bluejackets.nhl.com.

Hands On Fun
What city has the #1 Science Center in the US according to Parent’s Magazine? Chicago? Noooooooo. Columbus, baby! Our own COSI was the top ranked science center in the USA and it doesn’t take a magazine article to tell us that. Just ask any kid that’s ever been there and be sure to take yours to visit COSI this winter. www.cosi.org.

In an ongoing effort to keep you informed about all the cool stuff there is to do in our community, Muth will offer information about upcoming events and attractions in and around town. We’d love your input so let us know what your favorite Columbus activities are and stay tuned for more!

The holidays are all about spending time with the people you love and having fun with family and friends. Here are some of our favorite activities you and your family can try out. Let us know what your family enjoys doing around town this time of year.

Hit the Slopes
Chad Muth loves that whoosh! The sound of spraying snow is like music to his ears. What a great way for the whole family to get out of the house (away from screens) and out into the crisp winter air for some fun and exercise! If skiing seems too risky, zoom down the mountain in a snow tube for the big thrill minus the work. Two of Chad’s favorite ski resorts are Snow Trails near Mansfield, Ohio and Mad River Mountain in Zanesfield, Ohio.

Jump and Sweat
If your family doesn’t love to brave the elements, Muth’s Vice President, Tye Lang suggests taking kids of all ages to jump the day away at Sky Zone, an indoor trampoline park in Lewis Center, Ohio. Bounce, flip and get airborne on this giant trampoline paradise. It’s a ton of fun and fantastic exercise.

Columbus Comedy
A recent trek downtown found Chad and Gina with Production Manager John Righter and his wife, Tricia at the Shadowbox for Holiday Hoopla XX. Leave the kids at home for this one and be prepared for serious laughs.

Shop Till You Drop
Movies, shopping and grabbing a meal at local favorite shopping centers Polaris and Easton Towne Center makes for a great family outing. California Pizza Kitchen and B.D.’s Mongolian Grill are a couple of yummy choices for refueling.

Cookie Monsters Unite
What’s a holiday without sweet treats? Gina Muth recently attended an annual cookie exchange where a dozen friends brought 6 dozen cookies each. They divvy up the treats so that everyone takes home a variety package of 6 dozen cookies. Chad favorites are Chinese New Year cookies and Gina’s are Raspberry thumbprint cookies.

Bring on 2012
It’s a very Muth Christmas with old school board games and great food at home. Scattergories, Pictionary, Monopoly and other board games take center stage for a multi-generational party with a competitive twist. The Muth family rings in the New Year with all night bowling. Who will have a harder time staying awake past midnight…the little ones or the old folks? (And we won’t even discuss who gets cranky first!)

We’d love to know what your family’s favorite holiday and winter activities are. Please share them with us. We might even quote you in an upcoming post.

The Muth Family wishes you and your family a very happy holiday! May 2012 be the year that brings, peace, love and happiness to all!

The team at Muth and Company strongly believes in giving back to the community that we call home. Sometimes the true meaning of the holiday season starts to get lost in the hectic schedules, to-do lists and commercialism that seem to take over at this time of year. For Chad and Gina Muth, it’s been many years since their kids first inspired them to make giving back a major focus of the Muth holiday tradition, a tradition that has expanded through the years.

When the Muth’s oldest son Brandon was 6 years old, his Cub Scout troop started collecting canned foods for the Helping Hands Food Bank, part of the Big Walnut Friends Who Share organization based in Sunbury, Ohio. Big Walnut Friends Who Share works to improve the lives of individuals and families residing in the Big Walnut School District who may be experiencing a financially challenging situation and need extra help providing for themselves and their families. The Cub Scout food drive was only the beginning; through this organization the Muth family expanded their giving to include the Adopt a Family for Christmas and Coats for Kids programs. They have maintained that focus on giving for several years. “Little” Brandon is now 21, Anthony is 20 and Codie is 14. They love taking the lists from Helping Hands and hitting the stores to make Christmas wishes come true for children in need. From a new doll to a new coat, the Muth family has been happy to offer their help for the holiday season.

Chad and Gina took the idea to the office and began posting lists of food items requested by Helping Hands. The Muth team jumped at the chance to offer their support. Helping Hands also puts together care packages for families during the holidays for holiday dinners and to fill the gap during the school break. Many families have children who get regular meals at school. For a family in need, it may be a challenge to provide those meals during the 2-week winter break. The team at Muth and Company is proud to be able to help Big Walnut Friends Who Share. Giving back to the community is a company-wide value that Muth lives by everyday and especially during the holiday season. We want to thank our customers for their ongoing loyalty. We couldn’t do it without you! Happy holidays!

As a roofer for the past 20 + years, Chad Muth knows a thing or 2 (or 5!) about taking care of your home. So here’s Chad’s list of the Top 5 areas you should focus on when preparing your home for another harsh Columbus winter.
1. Start At The Top.
Clean all debris off roof and clear out your gutters and down spouts. Check flashing details to make sure nothing is pulling loose, that the caulk hasn’t cracked or deteriorated and that the flashing is in good condition. This will prevent clogs and keep water from overflowing into your home’s foundation.
2. Insulate Your Attic.
Improper attic insulation is the number one reason for heat loss in winter so make sure your attic is properly insulated before the temperature takes the plunge!
3. Winterize Those Windows.
Remove window screens and install storm windows to provide an extra layer of warmth that will keep you more comfortable while saving on heating costs.
4. Go Outside.
Gardening season is long over so put the hose away until spring. It’s also a good idea to cover the spigot with an insulated cover. These are inexpensive and available at home improvement stores.
5. Don’t forget the sump pump!
Remove the freeze plug from the sump pump drain coming out of the house into the ground. This is important to prevent the water lines from freezing and breaking which can cause thousands of dollars in damage.

MUTH’S GOT ESP!
If all of this sounds overwhelming, Muth and Company offers a special program to make winterizing easier. Our Extensive Service Plan can do the big winterizing jobs for you. We offer a comprehensive inspection of the entire roof, gutters and attic and give you a written inspection. This includes:

        1. Cleaning debris from roof and gutters.
2. Re-nailing all gutter spikes.
3. Caulking all necessary flashing
4. Painting all flashing details on roof
5. Inspecting attic and evaluate for proper venting, insulation, bath fans etc.

Chad is happy to share his expertise with Columbus area homeowners to make this winter a bit easier to get through. Contact the friendly, knowledgeable professionals at Muth & Company to schedule an ESP inspection for your home!

We would like to thank our customers in Columbus, Bexley, Westerville, Powell, New Albany and several other communities throughout the area for their support of Muth and Company’s October efforts to raise money for the Spielman Fund.

Breast cancer affects all of us, directly or indirectly. We all have someone we love, a friend or relative who has battled breast cancer. Here in Columbus, Stefanie Spielman was known and loved by many. A devoted mother of 4 and wife of former OSU Buckeye and NFL great Chris Spielman, Stefanie was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1998. The Spielmans were inspired to help others by creating the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research in 1999. The fund has raised over $9.1 million dollars to date for The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center-James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute. In 2009, Stefanie lost her battle with breast cancer but the fund that she and Chris established continues to grow. Muth and Company was inspired to support the Spielman fund with donations throughout the month of October, in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Again, thanks to all of our customers whose continued support allows us to make a difference in the Columbus area.

The weather is getting colder every day and as the temperature drops, you want to get the most out of your heating dollars while keeping your home warm and comfortable. One of the best ways to do that is with insulation. You wouldn’t go outside in the cold without a coat, don’t leave your home unprotected from the cold either.

Why is insulation so important?
Insulation is vitally important year round. A well insulated home is more energy efficient and the right type of insulation, properly installed, can help your house stay warm and bring down those winter heating bills. In the summer insulation prevents warm air from entering the house through the attic, keeping your house cooler and your air conditioning bills lower!

How should I insulate my home?
Different areas of the state have varying building standards for insulation. It’s important to meet the minimum requirements for your specific area. The type and thickness of the insulation is another consideration. Before any insulation is blown in, the attic must be properly prepared, especially where soffits, bath fans and other electrical work are involved.

Why Not Add Insulation Myself?
Installing insulation can be an overwhelming process. Keeping track of the different insulation requirements from county to county is confusing. It’s also dangerous for homeowners to work in their attic where the floorboards may not be secure.

As roofers, we at Muth and Company understand the regulations throughout Ohio. We also have expert knowledge about the affects an improperly prepared attic and poorly installed insulation can have on your home. Covering soffits may interfere with proper venting. This can trap moisture and heat, which can ultimately cause your shingles to deteriorate and may lead to mold growth. Accidentally blocking bath vents can trap moisture in the insulation, weakening the insulation and possibly leading to mold. Poorly protected lights can overheat, leading to a dangerous situation. Avoid all this by having Muth and Company install your insulation.

Why Call Muth and Company?
A Muth and Company representative will do a comprehensive attic evaluation and inspection of your home, including ventilation areas. We will provide you with a written form detailing your home’s problems and, most importantly, how we can offer solutions.

Muth is proud to have received Excellent Awards for the past 12 years with Angie’s List. We also boast an A+ with the Better Business Bureau and we are Master Elite Certified by GAF Corporation as well as a Shingle Master installer by CertainTeed roofing manufacturers. Let Muth and company take “INSULATE” off of your to do list! Contact Muth and Company today at 614-682-3060 to discuss your home’s insulation needs!

When the leaves begin to fall, it’s gutter-cleaning time. Those leaves that looked so pretty on the trees a few weeks ago are now a hazard to your roof and gutters. Leaves and debris fall on your roof, ending up in your gutters where they get saturated in rain and snow, becoming HEAVY. This extra weight can cause gutters to pull away from the supportive fascia board. The leaves and debris can also clog the gutters. If left uncleared, water will run over the front and back of the gutters causing rotting and potential foundation issues. As temperatures drop, excess water and snow can freeze in the clogged gutters and ice damming can occur. This dangerous condition can cause moisture to leak into the soffits and you can end up with those dreaded leaks inside your house.

An Ounce of Prevention

Don’t let it get that far! Preventative maintenance can virtually eliminate gutter issues before they cause permanent damage. Gutter cleaning is a hassle.
